After 5 yrs of putting down amateur radio, I'm looking to get back into it again and I'm pretty intrigued with the new kid on the block, Baofeng.

Full-featured & durable radios on the cheap? I'm hearing loud and clear that the UV-5R is *the* standard-issue, must-have Baofeng HT.

However, I heard that they just released a new model, the UV-5 X. Wow, talk about one sweet design: Anyone out there pick this hunk of hotness up yet? How does it compare to the 5R or the 5B? Does the volume go all the way to 0? Any improvements on the firmware?

Another vote for the UV-B5. They are fantastic low priced HTs. The B6 is a newer revision that replaces the channel adjust knob with an LED.

I prefer the feel of a knob instead of always pushing the up/down buttons, but to each their own. The UV-B5 doesn't need a replacement antenna like the 5R's - the stock B5 antenna is sufficient for most people; and the B5 mic is significantly better than the UV-5R than I tested. I'm not sure how the B5 would compare with this new 5X, but if it's anything like the 5R, I would spend a bit more on the B5. The five character limit on memory names is the biggest drawback that I find with the B5/B6's; I can't fit full call signs for all of the repeaters that I listen to.

Fortunately, here in BC, we use VE7 and VA7 for our prefixes, and I just shorten them to 'V7' on the memory name. It works well enough for me and it was easy enough to get over, but for some others, it may be a bigger problem. Considering that was the biggest problem that I had with the B5 and I easily managed with it, it's really not a problem at all. If you find that you can't take shortcuts with memory names, then save the frustration and go with something else.

The UV-3R mk II (not the 'plus') has a great receiver. Miles above the 5R. It is the best Baofeng has to offer IMO. (I have a sample size of 1 though.) My UV-B5 has some serious issues with RF leakage. I can feel the RF in my ear when using the included earphone. My anecdotal evidence suggests this is not unique to my radio.

I have two UV-5Rs and they are both deaf on 2m at my QTH. Take them out of the city and they work fine. But the receiver is completely swamped in the city. This is a well-documented problem. How To Cheat In Adobe Flash Cs6 Rapidshare Movies more. May I suggest this one instead? I have two of these and I ordered them from baofeng tech on amazon. They have been solid when I order from them.

When I ordered from other people in the US, the gear was NOT consistent, no support and the cables they sold me were crap. The cables I ordered from baofeng tech worked the first time on my Mac's. No drivers to load. Instantly connected to the radios. Ksafoneplus Dialer Pc Free Download on this page.

Edit: you have to get the good cable and the daily version of Chirp. Do not use the stable release or the software the ship. I own a uv-5re plus and its meh. The voice prompt has become corrupt and only buzzes instead of talking even tho everything else sounds perfect thought the speaker. The ptt, recieve, and standby backlight has stopped working. I was able to fix the light with a software reset, but the voice is still messed up.

I ordered and official baofeng speaker mic, and it only works if I hold upwards pressure on the mic to radio connector, or use a rubber band. It's not a magic radio, has the usual VHF line of sight mile or two range. If it was more than $35 I would never buy one. Also it's labeled as 5 watts but it's reality 3.5-4.5 depending on frequency. Also it's labeled as 5 watts but it's reality 3.5-4.5 depending on frequency.

What a lot of people don't know is that most of the baofengs are tuned to put out their highest power on bands outside of the amateur frequencies, because they are used commercially (for construction and business, etc.) in China. I saw a strong 5 watts from my uv-b5 into a dummy load while I was testing it through different frequency ranges. I don't remember the exact frequency, but it was definitely outside of the amateur bands.
