Mariah Carey's collection of soulful, seasonal pop is filled with Motown-flavored standards, playful R&B, and choir-backed gospel ballads. Carey co-wrote the album's centerpiece, “All I Want for Christmas is You,” with longtime collaborator Walter Afanasieff, whose production uses a prancing beat, jangling.

Artist Background: Describing Mariah as anything but the queen of the Billboard Charts is a disservice to her legacy, really. Her career started in 1990 with her self-titled debut album which saw 4 of its singles reach the number 1 slot, establishing her as a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the decade. Mariah has 18 number-one singles, 27 top ten singles, and is one of only five artists who have acheived four number-one singles from a single album.

On top of it all, Mariah is well-known for writing her own songs. She is behind only Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Max Martin in the list of songwriters with the most number-one singles with 17! The only one of her number-ones that she hadn't written herself? Her cover of 'I'll Be There'. Mariah is not only a stat-padding machine. She was at the front of the wave of defining Contemporary RNB as a genre. That is not to say that she just happened to work with popular musicians who could craft RNB beats; on top of writing a large amoount of her discography, Mariah has had a hand in the production in many of her songs as well.

After producing just one track on her commercial debut, she had at least co-producer credits on every song on every album of hers for the rest of the 90s (including Merry Christmas). Mariah is still out there producing music even if she doesn't have the commercial appeal that she did in the 90s. She last released an album in 2014 on Def Jam, just under four years after her 2010 sequel to her original 1994 Christmas album. The Elusive Chanteuse, the album sold only 122,000 units in the United States. She's currently engaged in a residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas.

No news on any future plans as far as studio recording is concerned. 5 hits by Mariah Carey outside of Daydream: • • • • • Album Description: Released October 3rd, 1995, Daydream is Carey's second-best selling album, with 25,000,000 units sold worldwide. Carey herself describes the album as the beginning of her a real transformation in her music, no longer incorporating quite as many gospel and soul influences as she had done on previous projects. The lead single and album-opener,, became the first single by a female artist to debut at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album attempts (and succeeds) to marry a more rhythmic R&B sound with a poppier adult contemporary sound as well, and at the same time moving away from the softer, piano-driven, more breathy ballads that filled Music Box.

The production on Daydream has more punch, more bass, and more weight to it, which contributed to the bouncier tracks with more swing to them like and. Standout Tracks: • Starts out like it's going to be an acoustic ballad, and then it cuts in with that punchy, bouncy, almost boom-bap beat with the keyboard over top of it. The lyrical concept is simple enough: we're broken up but I'll always love you.

Carey doesn't usually get too complex with the themes or the topics of discussion, but it's always about the presentation, and this one is iconic. • Mariah and Boyz' parts were both written about specific people that the two parties had lost to AIDS. An uplifting ballad with an inspired, angelic performance from Carey and the choir of Boyz II Men on the chorus. The vocal performances of the men on the verses are especially smooth and beautiful as well. • The opener to the album, and it couldn't have been done any better. Like on 'Always Be My Baby,' we get a somewhat deceiving opening that culminates in a soft, high pitched vocal note from Mariah that explodes into the beat of the track.

The swinging, funky guitar bit coupled with the bouncy verses from Mariah and the layered chorus on this track are great. There's even a bit of a g-funk-sounding synth whine in the background at parts.

Again though, this explosive, iconic song with all these emotions and dramatic orchestration and what's it about? Unrequited crushing, where the relationship only exists in her daydreams and fantasies. She's got a knack for taking everyday romantic emotions and expressing them so emphatically. Discussion • First and foremost, what do you think of the album?

What rating would you give it out of 10? • Were you around when it was released? Reach inside your geriatric old brain and pull out what you thought of the thing at the time: has your opinion on the album changed?

• Have you heard the album before today? Have you listened to Mariah before today? If not, you should!

We're discussing this album and this artist for a reason! (It's good!!) • What's your favorite song on the album? • What's your least favorite song on the album? • How does this album hold up in the artist's discography? • What should next week's Classic Album of the Week be?

Keep in mind that Classic Album of the Week is for pop albums that came out before 2000. There are many great albums that've come out in the new millennium worth discussing, but that's why we've got Throwback Thursday. Please listen to this album and share your thoughts, even if they don't respond to one of the questions above. If you dig this kind of music, listen to some of the other hits/albums in this artist's discography! If you don't dig this particular entry into this genre, try out other music in it!!

Normally down here I'll let you know what next week's classic album will be, but for now I'll see what the reaction to this even is. Have a good day, I love you all. Last week's CPAotW: • • • • •. First and foremost, what do you think of the album? What rating would you give it out of 10? The singles are obviously very good. Fantasy is the first song by a female to debut at #1, One Sweet Day spent a record 16 weeks at number 1, and Always Be My Baby somehow became one of her most memorable songs even though it wasn't her biggest hit.

The non-singles are also really good. The vocals on Underneath The Stars is amazing.

Nobody but Carey could do this song justice. Her buttery tone is very pleasant. Long Ago is one of my favorites on the album. The song has an amazing beat. Forever is a nice 50s inspired ballad.

I love her low notes on Melt Away. I was surprised to find that she produced this song herself! I Am Free is a nice gospel inspired song that was obviously very personal to her considering the whole divorce thing. Looking In was the perfect way to end the album as it foreshadowed the subject matter of her next album, Butterfly (which is equally as good as Daydream) Mariah's songwriting and vocals are great on Daydream. I give it an 8/10.

Were you around when it was released? Has your opinion on the album changed? I was born in 98. Have you heard the album before today? Have you listened to Mariah before today? If not, you should!

We're discussing this album and this artist for a reason! My mom is a huge fan which obviously has rubbed off on me. I listened to all her albums before and usually listen to her catalog a lot during Christmastime. What's your favorite song on the album? Either Always Be My Baby, Fantasy, or Long Ago What's your least favorite song on the album? When I Saw You.

Although I like the melody, I'm not a fan of the lyrics of this song. Also, the Open Arms cover was pretty boring. I'd give Daydream a 9/10 if these weren't on the album How does this album hold up in the artist's discography? I think either this or Butterfly is her best album. Her debut album, The Emancipation of Mimi, and Emotions are also good albums.

Oh, and Merry Christmas is a classic holiday album. My least favorite album by her is Music Box.

I don't know why it was so successful. It has 4 good songs (Dreamlover, Anytime You Need A Friend, Hero, Without You) but the rest are filler. What should next week's Classic Album of the Week be? Jagged Little Pill • • •.

First and foremost, what do you think of the album? What rating would you give it out of 10? I'll be upfront about being very biased because I LOVE me some Mimi. Daydream is my second favorite album of hers and another iconic moment in her career. The ballads don't drag the way half of Music Box always has to me, and everything is just so well thought out. This is a solid 9.5/10 for me. Were you around when it was released?

Has your opinion on the album changed? It was released when I was still a baby (Fantasy was dropped on my 1st birthday!), so I don't think my opinion has changed as much as it has straight up formed because that was before I can actually remember. What's your favorite song on the album? In any way, shape, or form! It's one of my favorite songs ever. That breezy, summery vibe makes me feel so happy, and that Genius of Love sample is one of my favorite moments of sampling ever. Underneath The Stars is a close second though.

What's your least favorite song on the album? When I Saw You is the only thing keeping it from being a perfect 10.

How does this album hold up in the artist's discography? It's honestly iconic. It was massive in sales (singles AND albums), left a mark on contemporary music (rapper guest spots in pop songs), and received tons of acclaim even with her being robbed at the Grammys.

Coustic Amp 190 Manual Dexterity. What should next week's Classic Album of the Week be? Depending on how you want to stretch the word pop, Hounds of Love by Kate Bush could be an interesting choice. If that's too far, then maybe Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul?

Fantasy: 10/10 Underneath The Stars: 10/10 One Sweet Day: 9/10 Open Arms: 6/10 Always Be My Baby: 10/10 I Am Free: 9/10 When I Saw You: 5/10 Long Ago: 10/10 Melt Away: 8/10 Forever: 9/10 Looking In: 8/10 I liked all of the songs on the album except for Open Arms and When I Saw You like. Best Song: Long Ago (masterpiece!!) Worst Song: When I Saw You Solid album! I give it an 8.5/10 as a whole. Sorry to break it to you, but the one with the masterpiece called Honey is the better album! Haha • • • •. First and foremost, what do you think of the album?

What rating would you give it out of 10? Obviously I'm a Mimi stan so I'm gonna have a happy outlook on any of her albums. But Daydream is an incredible album. You can tell the difference from Music Box to Daydream with this album. One of Mariah's best. I'd easily give it a 9/10. Were you around when it was released?

Reach inside your geriatric old brain and pull out what you thought of the thing at the time: has your opinion on the album changed? I was born the year it was made.

To be honestly the only Mariah I remember as a kid was We belong together, but since a few years ago when I began to listen to every album I'm better off lmao. Have you heard the album before today? Have you listened to Mariah before today?

If not, you should! We're discussing this album and this artist for a reason! (It's good!!) Yes. I actually found this thread simply by searching Daydream by Mariah Carey because I was relistening to it the entire week. Then I've found this subreddit too so I'm happy with it all.

What's your favorite song on the album? Underneath the stars. An amazing song, in my top 10 for Mimi. What's your least favorite song on the album? Probably Long Ago.

All of them have their own feel but Long Ago seems so bland and boring to me. How does this album hold up in the artist's discography? First there's the big hits, Fantasy, Always be my baby and one sweet day (16 week at Number 1????) which was then voted song of the decade by billboard if I remember correctly? This album completely changed Mariah's game and made her even more musically stronger than before.

What should next week's Classic Album of the Week be? Honestly I've just found this subreddit. I saw the other thread which is about The Police - Synchronicity.

I would recommend another Mariah album, preferably her self-titled one since it started it all, but obviously this thread is Mariah. Maybe the Velvet Rope by Janet Jackson? That's also an amazing album.

First and foremost, what do you think of the album? What rating would you give it out of 10? 9.5/10 Were you around when it was released? Reach inside your geriatric old brain and pull out what you thought of the thing at the time: has your opinion on the album changed?

I was 4 and wasn't even particularly interested in music, much less be aware of Mariah Carey. Have you heard the album before today? Have you listened to Mariah before today? If not, you should! We're discussing this album and this artist for a reason! (It's good! South Australian Spelling Test Template First Grade more. !) Yes, I've listened to this album along with most of her discography before. What's your least favorite song on the album?

I think it's a three way tie between 'Fantasy', 'Always Be My Baby' and 'Long Ago'. What's your least favorite song on the album? That's kinda hard to choose because there are honestly no bad songs on the album. Just some that grab you more than others. I'd say 'Looking In', 'When I Saw You' or 'One Sweet Day'.

I don't dislike those songs, I just have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy them. A mood that doesn't come up too often. How does this album hold up in the artist's discography?

For me it ranks as one of her best works, alongside Emotions, Butterfly and Emancipation. It's flaw free and it has aged so damn well while still embodying the essence of 90s R&B/pop (also somewhat groundbreaking in that she was one of the first R&B singers infuse hip-hop in her otherwise perfectly pure R&B with the ODB remix of 'Fantasy'). It's truly one of the all time best albums. What should next week's Classic Album of the Week be?

Keep in mind that Classic Album of the Week is for pop albums that came out before 2000. There are many great albums that've come out in the new millennium worth discussing, but that's why we've got Throwback Thursday How about Madonna's Bedtime Stories? It's a criminally underrated album and one of her best, possibly second only to Ray of Light.
